I have white walls (not allowed to paint), with red couches, red curtains, and a black shag rug. I have some cool hanging and floor lamp paper lanterns, a dragon wall art piece, and some dancing-folding-fans on the mantle, but what else would look good?
Any “Asian Theme” tips I can add to my living room?

Interesting – I’m Asian, yet my living room is not done in an Asian/Oriental theme. Contemporary is what I like with splashes of deep rich color… lots of cherrywood.
wat about a little water fountain? or a bonsai tree?
some bamboo
maybe some wooden carvings.
Look in books at the bookstores..and also visit Chinese stores..and get ideas if you can..also ask…I know that Jade is very important..also, red is a great “lucky” color…also think lucky animals..as in cats, dragons, pigs, tigers..etc…
also, think black lacquered tables..with red on them…fans, as you have stated…also statues…as in the lucky god(I can’t recall his name..) but if you rub his tummy you get good luck!
Also, candles, incense, oranges….nuts…
also, slippers, or you can use Japanese Tatami mats and or rice paper(which some Chinese love the Japanese effects too)!also think of beautiful cloths that you could lay on tables or dressers, etc…You could also hang kites on the ceiling..and or hanging Chinese mobiles.(or you could make your own too)!
I have seen some very creative items decorating rooms and homes..and they always look beautiful, and or makes the homes seem nice comfy, etc…
Think red rugs, or even instruments that you could hang on the wall(I have also seen this as well, that looks nice,..not to mention also Chinese paintings and or sketches etc….Very pretty, and aethestic!(Also, you could get those glass and cork framed cities…I used to have one..but they also make them larger than my small one that I used to have! They are pretty cool to look at!)Try looking and shopping in Asian stores near you..and ask a lot..don’t be afraid to ask…the more you ask, the more that you learn about their culture!!! This is a good thing!!!
Think artistic brass horse (statues) or whatever ..go for the gusto…learn more..and try to figure out what you would like in your home!!Good luck!
(I am not Chinese, however I have dated both Chinese and Japanese men…and also have relatives that are Chinese Thai, and Japanese American ..and know many Asian Americans…and also people who love and adore those cultures as well!)With me, included! *Smiles*!
Those Zen Things in a box. They’re like mini-water fountains. Really cute! You can get them at like barnes and noble and One World. :]
You know those screens that are a sort of room divider? (in the old movies the women used to get dressed behind them) You can get them in a rice paper (with black timber) oriental design. You don’t need to have them separate a room, but can just sit it along a wall. You can also get those hanging scrolls with big asian symbols painted along them. Also, you can get these long sticks with artificial cherry blossoms on them. They look great in a big vase (sometimes they come with lights attached and you “plug in” the sticks). Get a really low, square coffee table in dark/black timber and put some cushions on the floor around it. That’s how the Japanese do their “ancient tea ceremony” and how many traditional asians eat (it’s really fun).
Besides a bamboo plant and a water fountain for good luck, you can also add one of those 3-panel room dividers (that bend). Although your intention is not to divide your living room, it certainly has an Asian them to it. A red scarf hanging on it would be a complimentary accesory.
