Cleaning Persian Rugs
If you have a Persian rug in your home, you most certainly value the beauty of
these luxurious pieces of home décor. A Persian carpet can completely transform
the look of a room and have a dramatic effect visually. There is one problem
with a Persian rug though – how does one clean it? Many are unaware of the
methods of cleaning Persian rugs. These are very valuable items, sometimes
costing thousands of dollars, so it is essential to take very good care of your
rugs. To help you in cleaning Persian rugs in your home, we have put together
some of the ways of keeping these valuable and beautiful additions to your home
below. Read on!
1) First and foremost, be sure to vacuum your carpet on a regular basis. Dirt
and grit will tend to get worked in, all the way down to the base of the carpet
where it can do damage to the wool and result in losing mass. Always vacuum your
carpet using only the suction attachment, not the beater brush to remove dirt.
Beater brushes take off a small amount of pile each time you use them and can
destroy the fringe in no time at all.
2) Rotate your Persian rug from time to time – this will even out wear from foot
traffic and also even out any fading that may occur from exposure to sunlight.
3) Pet urine can do a lot of damage to your Persian rug. If your house pet has
an accident on the rug, use club soda and plain water to flush out the area
thoroughly and hang the rug out to dry completely before putting it back on the
floor. If your pet tends to do this regularly, talk to a professional cleaner
about the best way to take care of the problem.
4) Club soda and a clean towel is also the best way to take care of food and
liquid spills on your rug. Make sure to clean these spills as soon as possible.
If the spill is a semi liquid such as mustard, allow the spill to dry thoroughly
and then scrape it away and clean with club soda afterwards. Before laying the
carpet back down, make absolutely sure that it is dry – a wet carpet can quickly
become mildewed or become a habitat for mold; this can seriously damage your
precious rugs.
5) Remember that you should NEVER have your Persian rug dry cleaned – the
chemicals can damage your rug. Also, steam cleaning is not an option as it will
cause colors to bleed, which is detrimental to the appearance of your Persian
rug. Cleaning Persian rugs should be done with a gentle detergent which is
made for this purpose. Both sides of the rug should be thoroughly scrubbed and
the rug completely dry before being relaid.
Cleaning Persian rugs is not like maintaining a regular household carpet.
These are expensive items which require special care. If properly kept up, they
will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment. Remember, when your Persian
rugs becomes visibly dirty, it is probably time to take it in to a
professional cleaner.
